In addition to the NVPO supported research, several DHHS agencies support vaccine research.
Because vaccines can provide a safe, effective and efficient means to prevent illness, disability and death from infectious diseases, research leading to new and improved vaccines is a high priority for NIH . See the National Institute for Infectious Diseases (NIAID), The Vaccine Research Center (VRC), the National Institute on Aging, and the National Institute for Child and Human Development (NICHD) for specific, disease-related vaccine information.
The National Immunization Program, CDC supports research to better understand the potential long-term effects of vaccinations and to understand how to better communicate the potential risks and benefits of vaccines to the public. Vaccine safety data is collected through the Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System, which is co-funded by the FDA.
A wide variety of changing technical and scientific issues related to the safety, potency, and efficacy of novel biological products requires knowledge of new developments and concepts of basic research in the relevant biological disciplines. The Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, FDA supports research to better understand fundamental biological processes and provides a strong scientific base for regulatory review.
AHRQ's research projects examine the availability, quality, and costs of health care services; and ways to improve the effectiveness and appropriateness of clinical practice, including the prevention of disease.
